Belgium

We will order the list as it is currently located in the FIH World Ranking. And we start with the Belgian team, who today are at the head of the world top.

Hockey was introduced in the country during the early twentieth century, in 1908 and since then, various teams have been formed throughout the national territory. Throughout the last century, Belgium attended some Olympic games in Field Hockey and played some summer games, but nothing remarkable. It was not until the 2000s that the country began to invest in improving the infrastructure and modernizing the game, which gave results in subsequent years, with Belgium winning the world cup in 2018.

Australia

The National Field Hockey team of Australia or the Kookaburras is one of the best known field hockey teams and also one of the most successful sports teams in the country.

They are one of the most beloved teams in Australia, being the only Australian team to win sports medals in recent Olympic games. In addition, they have won three world cups, 1986, 2010 and 2014. Field Hockey arrived in Australia a little later than Belgium, but gained importance much faster.

Netherlands

Field hockey is one of the most important sports in the Netherlands and their love for the game has allowed this team to be one of the most successful of all time. Among the competitions they have won we can count: the Summer Olympics twice, the Hockey World Cup three times, the Champions Trophy eight times, the Euro Hockey Nations Championship five times and the Hockey World League eleven times. They have also produced notable players, who are recognized among the best field hockey players in history, such as Teun de Nooijer.

India

The Indian National Field Hockey team is probably the best known field hockey team in the world, as well as the most important in the country along with the national cricket team.

They won their first Olympic medal in 1928, then continued on a streak of six Olympic medals in a row, until 1960 when they were defeated for the first time. In 1980 they won an Olympic medal again but the following three decades the team’s performance declined markedly, until the middle of this century, when the performance of the Indian team has improved remarkably, placing them in the top 4 of the world’s teams.

Other best known teams

Other teams that are also well known are the team from Pakistan, the team from Argentina, Germany, England and New Zealand, who have had an important performance during the history of field hockey.
